Most brides have never gone shopping for a bridal gown, so before
you head out to hit all the bridal boutiques that you
can, here are a few things you should know.
Have fun with the experience, it is once in a lifetime and should
not be stressful.
Pick only a few close friends or family to go with
you shopping, too many opinions will confuse you. You
can get all the girls together for the bridesmaid
dress shopping instead of your
gown.
Always keep an open mind, you may think you have
a really good idea of what you want before you head
out shopping, but
try on lots of styles, that way you can make the
most informed decision about what looks the best
on you.
During the busy bridal season (January - March) you
may need to make an appointment.
Limit your bridal gown search to 3-4 stores,
if you go to more than that, it is difficult
to remember what dress you saw in which store.
Allow for plenty of time when trying on gowns,
at least 2 hours. This will give you time to
go through the gowns that you
want to try, and retry on the ones you liked
the best,
this will assist you to narrow down your favorites.
Dress sizes run smaller in size compared
to your clothing, don’t be upset when you have
to try on a larger size than you usually
wear, it should be expected. Usually the
gowns run one to
two sizes smaller, depending on the manufacturer
and style of the gown.
Although this may
be pretty obvious to most of us, for some
it’s
not but - Please wear panties when trying
on dresses!
Don’t judge a gown when it is on
the hanger! It will look very different when
you have it on. A dress that you love on
the hanger can look totally different when you
have it on, and a dress that you didn’t care for
could be the dress that you wear to your
wedding.
Expect to try on lots of gowns,
every style and color that you can find. You
will never know if you like a style until
you try it on. Even if a particular style
does not flatter your shape
from one manufacturer, do not rule out the
same style in another manufacturer, they
all fit differently. Read tip
on Choosing a Gown Style.
Please use shopping
etiquette. Don’t wear a lot of makeup,
try to avoid foundation the day of shopping,
it will rub off on the gowns. Treat all gowns as if it
were your own, please do not throw
them on the floor, bridal boutique owners
have a large investment in their gowns so please treat
them with respect. Please take off
rings before trying on the gowns, your beautiful
ring can cause major damage to the delicate fabrics.
If at all possible, avoid bringing children
along, unless you
are specifically shopping for them. Dress
shopping is not as exciting for them
as it is for you, they will get bored fast. So
for your comfort (and other store
patrons) please
leave children at home with a sitter.
Remember, a wedding is one special day in your life, but marriage
is forever.
Set a budget and spend only what you can afford; the amount of money you
spend does not guarantee a successful marriage.
